What is a Pixiu?

The Pixiu is a winged guardian beast from Chinese mythology, said to feed on gold and silver and to have no opening to release what it takes in. That one detail is why it became the fortune symbol it is: a creature that gathers and holds. It is usually shown with its head raised and its mouth open, ready to take something in, and that is how the charm on this bracelet is cast.

What is black obsidian?

Black obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too quickly to crystallise. In Feng Shui it belongs to the water element, the element associated with movement and flow, which is why it is the stone most often paired with a wealth symbol. In crystal practice it is also known as a grounding and protective stone. The beads here are the real material, cut and polished at 10mm, which is why the bracelet has more weight to it than the photographs suggest.

Which wrist do you wear a Feng Shui bracelet on?

Wear it on your left wrist with the Pixiu's head facing away from your body. In Feng Shui practice the left side is the receiving side, so the tradition is to let the beast face outward, as though it is looking for what it is meant to bring back. If you wear a watch on your left, this sits comfortably on the right instead. The tradition is a tradition, not a rule.

How do you activate a Pixiu bracelet?

The common practice is to rinse it under running water, let it dry, and hold it for a moment while you name what you are working toward. Some people repeat that on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month, and some pass it through sage smoke instead. None of it is required for the bracelet to be worn. It is a small ritual for setting an intention, and that is the whole of it.

How can you tell the obsidian is real?

Real obsidian is glass, so it feels cool to the touch, warms slowly, and carries a noticeable weight for its size. Hold a bead to the light at an angle and you will see a deep brown-black rather than a flat opaque black, with the faint swirl the volcanic glass sets as it cools. Polished plastic beads feel light and warm up in seconds. Will it fit?

How do you care for black obsidian?

Keep it away from perfume, hand sanitiser and chlorine, which dull the polish over time, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Take it off before swimming or showering. Rest it somewhere it will not be knocked against a hard edge. Looked after, it keeps its shine for years.
